Abstract

666,205. Making electric components. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS, Inc. Aug. 7, 1947 [Feb. 28, 1946], No. 21700/47. Class 83 (ii). [Also in Groups XI and XL (a)] Lead-in wires extending from an envelope are threaded into tubular pins of a base by stationarily supporting the base, placing a plurality of wire guides against respective pins, moving the envelope towards the base so as to thread the wires through the guides into the pins, and then moving the base towards the envelope to cause the wires to be threaded right through the pins, and removing the guides to allow telescoping of the base over an end of the envelope, the wire guides each including a pair of concave nose-pieces aligned to form a tubular channel when in position against its respective. pin, and means for separating the nose-pieces during removal of the guides to allow the said telescoping to take place. The nose-pieces 74 of guide members 59 are split longitudinally and are urged apart by a spring in the inoperative position 59a. When members 59 are lowered, however, their inner ends contact and the split. parts of nose-pieces 74 are forced together. The base 4 of the thermionic valve 8 is mounted on an adapter 20 and by pressing a button in plate 6 piston 17 makes a downward stroke, thus causing by means of resilient link connection 64, 68, 72, 73 the guide members 59 to descend to the full-line position shown in the Figure and by means of resilient link connection 19, 22, 29, 30, adapter 20, to contact plate 6. Scallopshaped parts 82 of members 59 are aligned over the apertures in the terminal pins 3 so that the leads 1 can now be pushed partly into the terminal pins 3 by lowering glass envelope 2. This action automatically closes a switch and as a result piston 17 moves upwardly, thereby through resilient link connection 19, 22, 29, 30 forcing base 4 upwards and thus threading leads 1 right through terminal pins 3, a slight downward pressure being exerted on envelope 2 in the meantime. The upward movement of adapter 20 is limited by stops 38. At the same time, members 59 are raised by resilient link connection 64, 68, 72, 73 to the dotted line position against stops 97 and spring-loaded fingers 43 also moving upward-raise knock-out pins 36 to eject the base 4 from adapter 20. Prior to the completion of the upstroke extensions 44 on fingers 43 engage cam surface 42, thereby deflecting the fingers and releasing them from under the collar 53. When the operation is repeated with another base 4 the fingers 43 snap back into place again under collar 53 when the piston 17 begins its downstroke. The pins 36 are tubular so as to receive that part of the leads 1 which project below the terminal pins 3. After removal from the threading-machine, the projecting ends of leads 1 are severed and the leads soldered to the lower ends of the. tubular pins 3. The pins 3 are arranged in a circle and a thin ring of a thermoplastic cement is used to form the seal between the envelope 2 and base 4 and also acts as a, protective bumper.
