Abstract
665,954. Making pulleys; spinning; angular bending. STUART TURNER, Ltd., and GARDINER, A. R. Oct. 10, 1950 [Oct. 25, 1949], No. 27433/49. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). A steel or non-ferrous metal V-groove pulley is made by turning from a bar &c. a hub 15 with axially-spaced radial flanges 16, 17, clamping this in a former adapted to determine the angle to which the flanges are to be outwardly bent and then forcing a rotary tool between the flanges while rotating the former &c. about the axis of the work. The former may comprise a holder 22 to receive the hub 15 having a boss 23 for chucking and a bore in which is secured a bolt 24 on to which a head 26 is screwed to clamp the hub. The tool may comprise a wheel 19 to force the flanges 16, 17 into contact with the faces 29. Two or more such pulleys may be welded or brazed together coaxially or a multiple pulley can be made in one piece by turning pairs of flanges at intervals along a bar and then forming each pair into a V-groove as described above, the diameter of the bar between one pair of flanges and the next being of larger diameter, see 31, Fig. 5, than between each pair to ensure that the intermediate flanges 16, 17 are bent correctly. The Provisional Specification describes the use of a former as optional.
