Abstract
An aqueous solution or dispersion comprising an organic ester of a carboxylic acid having a molecular weight not above 100 and a polyglycol having a molecular weight of at least 200 is applied to textile fibres, filaments and threads to reduce or minimize the effects of electric charges. Preferably the ester is derived from acetic acid, and may be diacetin or ethylene glycol monomethyl ether acetic ester. The preferred polyethylene glycol has a molecular weight of about 4000. A solvent may be added to make the mixture freely soluble in water. Such solvents include diethylene glycol, diethylene glycol monobutyl ether and low molecular weight alcohols. If the ester is not water-soluble, a peptizing agent such as sodium petroleum sulphonate may be added to make it readily dispersible. The preparation is particularly useful for polyamide fibres, but cotton, flax, rayon or wool may also be treated. In an example (all parts by weight) 46 parts of diethylene glycol, 34 parts ethylene glycol monomethyl ether acetic ester and 20 parts polyethylene glycol of molecular weight 4000 are mixed with 20 parts distilled water.
