Abstract

A postal packet is provided with one or more spots of material capable of influencing the magnetic field of one or more magnets, so that an impulse is generated in an associated electric circuit which impulse is utilized to orientate the packet into a predetermined position. The spots are incorporated in the postage stamps of packets of letters being fed to a franking machine and are preferably in the form of stripes of magnetized or magnetizable material arranged in mutually perpendicular planes. The letters are shaken by known means on to a conveyer so that they are supported on one of their four edges with the stamp facing front or rear. The eight resulting positions possible are differentiated either by the different effects of the perpendicular stripes in the stamp or by having a plurality of electromagnetic sensing heads which compare the times of impulses owing to the stamp being near the front or rear edge of the letters. The sensing heads may be in pairs on opposite sides of the path of the letters so that each pair of impulses can be compared to determine whether the stamp is facing front or rear. The resulting impulse or impulses are caused to actuate mechanism for causing the appropriate orientation of the letter.
