Abstract

A mineral oil composition for use in metal coating processes comprises a blend of mineral oil and hydrogenated, especially partly hydrogenated, fish oil and/or marine distillates, the composition having an acid number of between 3 and 15. The hydrogenated fish or marine oil distillates may be obtained from codfish, codliver, dogfish, dolphin, herring, Japfish, Menhaden, porpoise, salmon, sardine, seal, shark and whale oils. From 2 to 20 per cent by weight of the hydrogenated oil may be added. High molecular fatty acids such as oleic and stearic acids, animal and vegetable oils such as coconut, castor, cottonseed and peanut oils, and synthetic lubricants produced by the polymerization of olefins may also be added to the composition. Specifications 586,839, 665,447 and 665,448 are referred to.ALSO:Metals are coated by a process which includes cleaning and pickling the metal, passing it through a flux bath and then through a molten bath of tin, lead or a mixture of lead and tin, and finally passing the metal through an oil composition, maintained at an elevated temperature, comprising a mixture of mineral oil and hydrogenated, especially partially hydrogenated, fish oil and/or marine oil distillates, the composition having an acid number of between 3 and 15. High molecular fatty acids such as oleic and stearic acids, animal and vegetable oil such as coconut, castor, cottonseed and peanut oils, and synthetic lubricants produced by the polymerization of olefins may also be added to the composition. Specifications 586,839, [Group III], 665,447, and 665,448, are referred to.
