Abstract
A water insoluble antibiotic polypeptide antibacterial agent is solubilized in aqueous solution by the addition of a water-soluble salt of an aliphatic quaternary ammonium compound of general formula <FORM:0664997/IV (b)/1> where R is an aliphatic radical of 16 to 18 carbon atoms; R1, R2 and R3 are aliphatic radicals of not more than 4 carbon atoms; said aliphatic radicals being saturated or unsaturated; and X is an acid ion of an inorganic acid, e.g. chloride, bromide, iodide, sulphate, nitrate and cyanide, or an organic acid, e.g. acetate and benzoate. A solvent for the antibiotic, e.g. ethyl alcohol, may be present to the extent of 1 to 25 per cent of the aqueous concentrate. The quaternary ammonium compound is used in an amount of between 1/2 to 2 times that of the antibiotic, which is less than 20 per cent of the aqueous composition. Preferred antibiotics are tyrothricim, gramicidin, gramicidin S, tyrocidine, subtilin and fumigacin. Specified quaternary ammonium compounds are cetyl trimethyl ammonium-bromide, -iodide, -nitrate, -acetate, -benzoate, -chloride, -sulphate -cyanide, -tartrate and -salicyate; cetyl triethyl ammonium-bromide and -iodide; stearyl trimethyl ammonium bromide; oleyl trimethyl ammonium bromide; and cetyl dimethyl N-butyl ammonium bromide. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 633,175.
