Abstract

664,982. Glazing skylights; ventilators. O'KEEFFE, W. F. Aug. 24, 1949 [March 12, 1949; Aug. 1, 1949], Nos. 22045/49 and 22046/49. Classes 20(iii) and 137 Skylight sash bars comprise a vertical web 21 and a horizontal footing 22 with two pairs of flanges 24, 26, upstanding from a horizontal web 23, flanges 24 being adapted to support a pair of panes 10 so that their upper surfaces are in the plane of the top of the vertical web. Self-tapping screws 28 received in a slot 27 in the web secure a longitudinal cap 29 in position. Waterproof paper, asphaltic felt &c. 31 is interposed between cap and panes. Sheet metal flashing 12 overlies the upper edge of the panes and lies under the caps 29; a lower flashing extends upwardly from a building frame into lateral grooves cut in the sash bars projecting beyond it. Side flashings 43 are also secured to the frame end under a cap 29. A glass stop member is retained in grooves cut in the bars. Instead of footing 22 a thickened portion of web 21 may be bolted to an angle or inverted T-member 51 secured to the frame structure. The lower flashing may be of aluminium sheet bent to Z-shape with a turned-over top portion 56b secured by screws 58 engaging the ends of slots 27 and weep holes 59 at the bottom angle. In a modification in which the skylight does not protrude substantially above the plane of the roof the bars are secured at their ends by T-members screwed to the side faces of the framing. An aluminium shoe also secured to the frame at the lower end of the bar has a glass supporting lip. The bars of a doublepitch skylight are secured to a vertical ridge bar of similar depth surmounted by a top flashing. A ventilator 81 may be mounted over such a skylight with sheet aluminium flashing 84; or a similar ventilator may be carried by a horizontal frame member of the building to which the top ends of the bars are also secured. In another arrangement one side wall of the ventilator is flush with a building wall, the top ends of the bars of a single pitch skylight terminating in the shaft. A skylight may be mounted on transverse framing with the top ends of the bars in the same vertical plane as a screen hood-ventilator. Adaptations fitting the skylight to corrugated metal and tar and gravel roofs are described. A cross gutter underlying a joint between two panes constituting a single span comprises a portion 104 of a member also including a backing plate 106, a partition 107 and a turned-over flashing 108 with a mastic coating 109 over plates 104, 107.
