664,643. Testing shock absorbers. AUSTIN MOTOR CO., Ltd., WEAVING, J. H., and PAYNE, E. R. May 12, 1950 [June 13, 1949], No. 15618/49. Class 106 (ii). Apparatus for testing shock absorbers comprises a pivoted cradle 1 to which the shock absorber 13 can be rigidly secured with its bearing axis coincident with the axis of the cradle and with its actuating arm 14 normal thereto, two fluid-pressure cylinders 10, one at each side of a plane radial to the said axis and having pistons 9 engaged with the cradle or abutments 7, 8 thereon to oppose or prevent rocking of the cradle, and indicating means operated by fluidpressure variations in said cylinders when the shock-absorber arm is moved. The indicating means may comprise, for each cylinder, a pair of pressure gauges of different ranges connected through non-return valves and a three-way cock to the outlet pipe 11 of the cylinder. A three-way cock is connected in the lead to each gauge giving access to a pressurerelease pipe. The cradle 1 has trunnions 2 in ball-bearings 3 mounted in side members 5 of a frame 6 in which the cylinders 10 are formed. The pistons 9 are normally supported by light springs 12 but, in use, oil is admitted to the cylinders through inlet pipes (not shown). The cradle 1 is adapted to receive several alternative types of shock-absorbers so that, when a shock absorber is secured thereto, the loading point of the shock absorber is in the horizontal plane of the cradle axis. The shock absorber is actuated by a connecting-rod 18 pivoted to a disc 20 rotated by power means. The outlet pipes 11 of the cylinders may be connected through stop-cocks to an electrical pressure-sensitive device connected to a cathode-ray oscillograph, the trace of which may be photographed.
