Abstract

664,504. Work-holders. ABBEY, A. (Vogl, H., Vogl, C., Stanley, M., and Vogl, O., (trading as Wilton Tool Manufacturing Co.)). Sept. 10, 1948, No. 23892/48. Class 83 (iii). A work-support comprises a ball 35 carrying a pin 41 on which is mounted a work-holding element 42, a socket for the ball, means for contracting the socket to grip the ball inadjusted position, and a standard 26 to support the socket in axial alignment therewith. Workpieces can be secured in holes in the element 42 or clamped thereto and adjusted universally about the standard 26, which may be bolted to a bench. The ball 35 is supported on a loose bearing 32, Fig. 4, which is prevented from rotating by engagement with a pin 37 secured to a sleeve 28, that is attached by pins 29 to the standard. A rotatable bearing 38, against which the ball 35 is locked in adjusted position by means of a plunger 44 actuating the loose bearing 32, is positioned over the ball and secured by its flange 30 beneath the sleeve 28, a slot 40 being formed in the bearing 38 to permit vertical adjustment of the pin 41. The plunger 44 has a lock-nut 46 and adjusting- screw 45 at the top end thereof and a ball 47 in a seating at the bottom end, the ball engaging a groove in an eccentric spindle 49 formed on the end of a hand-operated shaft 48 so that by operating the shaft the throw of the eccentric spindle actuates the plunger. In a modification, Fig. 11, a piston 65 is actuated hydraulically to bear on the ball 35, the piston being prevented from rotating by co-operation between a slot 71 therein and a pin 72 passing through the standard and sleeve 28. Hydraulic pressure is created behind the piston 65 by turning a screw 61 which advances a plunger 63 in a passage 59 adjoining a main passage 56 provided with a filler-plug 57. The piston 65 is returned by a spring 68 acting between the pin 72 and head 67 of the piston. Cups 64, 73 of resilient material such as rubber or leather, are provided at the head of the plunger 63 and piston 65, respectively. In a further modification, Fig. 19, the loose bearing 32 is prevented from rotating by a pin 37 which also secures the sleeve 28 to the standard 26. An elongated slot 90 receives the pin 72 for securing the piston 38 in its bore, and a hand-lever 37 having an eccentric cam-surface 85 is adapted to actuate the plunger 82 in the passage 59a. A further passage 76 is formed in the standard 26 to receive a screw 79 which bears on a plunger 80 used to adjust the pressure behind the piston 88. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 631,690.
