A collapsable-bag washer and extractor for laundry comprises an air- and water-tight flexible bag 20 inside which is an oscillatory agitator 26 having a central hollow conduit 32 communicating with the upper interior part of the bag through an upper opening 44, lower outlets from the conduit and from under the agitator to the outside of the bag, and a pump 41 for removing water and air from the bag through the hollow conduit and from the top and bottom openings (44 and 30). A valve 53 is automatically opened a predetermined time after the pump has withdrawn the scum and dirtier water through the opening 44 to withdraw the remainder of the water through the bottom opening 30. The agitator shaft 32 is connected by a flexible coupling 43 with a T- connection 43a in a pipe 45 leading to the intake side of the pump 41. The outlet 30 leads to a pipe 46 and is also used for the admittance of water from a supply hose 11 and thermostatic mixing chamber 47. The bag 20 is of rubber or like material and its upper rim 22 is anchored to a flange 23 of a top plate 24. The bag has an upper circular opening closed by a cover 13 which serves as an adequate air seal upon evacuation of air from the interior of the bag. Vents 61, 62 permit collapse of the bag under suction into the chain line position. The agitator shaft 32 is driven through bevel gears 34, 35, a connecting rod 36 and crank disc 37 by a motor 40. The pump 41 is also driven by the motor 40, oppositely acting overrunning clutches being provided in the respective drive connections. The pump 41 drives liquid to a reservoir 49 and thence through an outlet 50 to the drain. The reservoir 49 has a back connection 51 with the pump to keep it primed.
