In order that -the pressure produced by the pump I8 may not become excessive when the pump is operated, a relief conduit 35 is connected with the conduits I8 and 28 intermediate the ends thereof and is provided with a suitable relief valve 38 adapted to open at a predetermined pressure to permit water to be recirculated through the pump I8.
The extractor 3| hereinbefore referred to consists of a circular vat 38 which is mounted in a suitable opening 38 provided in the cover 5 at one side ofthe axis of the vat I, the vat 38 in this instance, being provided with an outwardly projecting annular iiange 38 intermediate the ends thereof adapted to engage the upper surface of the cover 5 adjacent the opening 38 for limiting the downward movement of the extractor 3 I. In this instance, the bottom of the extractor vat 38 is provided with a hollow boss 481 having the opening therethrough in registration with the outlet opening 4I provided in said vat.'
The boss 40 is provided with external threads adapted to be engaged by a suitable nut 42 which clamps the outlet end of the conduit 38 to the extractor 3 I. The conduit 30, in this instance, extends through a suitable opening in the side of the frame 2 and then extends upwardly along the outside of the vat I to a short distance below the normal position of the bottom of the extractor 3I where it is passed through the wall of the vat to the interior thereof and then connected with the extractor vat 3I in the manner just described.
The opening in the vat I through which the conduit 30 passes, may be sealed in a liquid-tight manner in any suitable way as by a flanged bushing 43 and nut 44 screw-threaded on the outer end of said bushing, as indicated in Figure 4.
It is now obvious that the extractor 3I may be readily removed from the washing machine when desired, by merely unscrewing the nut 42 which will disconnect the conduit 30 from the extractor and permit the upward vertical movement of the extractor through the opening 39.
The extractor vat 38 has its upper edge rolled outwardly and downwardly for passing over the upper edge of an annular flange 45 provided on the inner edge of a ring member 46 which surrounds the upper portion of the vat 38. This ring member 46 is secured by screws 41 to the underside of an annular trough member 48 which, in this instance, has the lower face thereof provided with an annular recess 48' adapted to receive the upper rolled edge of the vat 38 for clamping said edge between the ring 46 and trough member 48.
- A flexible water impervious bag or clothes container 50 which conforms generally to the shape and size of the vat 38, is inserted therein and has its upper edge rolled outwardly and downwardly around and engaging the upper edge of the vat 38 and is positioned in the annular recess 48 between the trough member 48 and the upper rolled edge of the vat 38, in which position it is securely clamped by the ring 45.
The bag or squeezer 5I)l is preferably made of rubber, but it may, if desired, be made of other appropriate material which is impervious to water and which may be easily folded or flexed during the extracting of the water from the clothes contained therein.
The upper surface of the trough member 48 is aoiaosv provided with an annular channel or groove to form a trough 52 for receiving the water pressed from the clothes during the extractor operation. The outer edge of the trough member 48 adjacent the trough 52 is provided with spaced inwardly extending lugs 53 which are adapted to co-operate with a plurality of circumferentially spaced outwardly extending lugs 54 provided on the undersurface of a cover 55 positioned over the trough member 48 for holding the cover in place. 1
These lugs 54 on the cover 55 are spaced from the lower surface of the cover and are adapted to enter the spaces between the lugs 53 on the trough member 48 and to be moved downwardly to a position below said lugs 53 so that by rotating the 1 cover 55, the lugs 54 on said cover may be brought into alignment with and beneath the lugs 53 on the trough member 48 for maintaining said cover 55 in the operative position relative to the extractor 3I as the water is being squeezed from the clothes contained in said extractor.
In order that the cover 55 may be rotatably supported to permit the movement thereof into and out of locking engagement with the extractor 3|, there is provided a cover-supporting 2 bracket 51 which has one end hingedly connected at 58 to the upper end of a pair of spaced upwardly extending lugs 58 secured to or made integral with the trough member 48.
The bracket 51 is adapted to extend outwardly from the pivot 58 and'has the outer end thereof provided with a pendant shouldered post 5l arranged co-axially with the vat 38 when in the closed position and upon which the cover 55 is rotatably mounted. The cover 55, in this instance, is a circular member having the peripheral edge thereof extended over the lugs 54 and spaced therefrom so as to permit .the lugs 53 on the trough member 48 to enter therebetween during the locking of the cover and at the same time, permit the edge of the 'cover' to engage the upper surface of the lugs 53 for limiting the downward movement of the cover.
Any suitable means for assisting in rotating the cover may be provided which, in this lnstance, consists of an upwardly extending knob 6I secured to the cover near the outer edge thereof.
When the cover 55 has been brought to the closed position and it is desired to operate the device, the cover 55 is partially rotated by means of the knob 6I and this partial rotation of the cover will bring the lugs 54 on the cover beneath the lugs 53 on the trough member 48 so that the cover will be locked in the closed position.
In order to permit this rotary movement, the cover has the outer edge thereof provided with a pair of inwardly extending slots or recesses 53 6 for receiving respective hinge lugs 59, and for the purpose of limiting such movement of the cover so that it will be conveniently brought to rest in either the locked or unlocked position, the cover is provided with an upwardly extending lug or finger 55' adapted to contact` with one or `the other of a pair of opposed bosses 51 provided on the underside of the cover bracket 51, (see Figure 11).
The trough 52 is provided with an outlet opening 64 formed in the outer side wall thereof, and this opening has its outer end portion slightly enlarged in diameter for receiving the flanged end of a discharge spout 55 which is rotatably maintained in the opening by a nut 1 asados? 36 screw-threaded inthe outer end of said opening.
The spout 86, in this instance, is bent at substantially right angles a short distance from the anged end to extend downwardly into an aperture 61 formed lin one side of the cover member E adjacent the extractor vat 38. 'Ihis spout 55 is adapted to be swung about the axis of the opening for directing the water pressed from the clothes and iiowing into the trough 52 into the washer vat I, or by swinging the spout, the water may be guided into an adjacent laundry tray, not shown, or other suitable receptacle extraneous of the vat- I.
When it is desired to operate the machine, the washer vat I may rst be supplied with wash water until the water level reaches a relatively short distance below the extractor 3|, as indicated by dotted line X, Figure 4. This will obviously iill the pump I6 with water and possibly the conduit 3@ tothe same level as the Water in the vat i.
When the motor 'I is started to oscillate the dolly E for washing clothes contained in the vat i in the conventional manner, the pump i6 will also be operated by the vmotor l, but it is evident that by rotating the valve member 22 of the valve I3 to bring the outlet aperture 23 out of registration with all of the outlet openings 25, 23`and 2l of the valve, the pressure thus developed will open the relief valve 36 and permit the water circulated by the pump to be by-passed through the relief conduit 35 without aiecting the water contained in the vat i.
When it is desired to extract liquid from clothes, they are placed in the container or bag Sil and the cover 55 is locked in the closed position. The valve member 22 is then rotated to. bring the outlet aperture 2 into communication with the outlet 2l of the valve, as indicated in Figure 5, which will connect the conduit 3D with the outlet conduit I8 of the pump. This will reduce the pressure in the conduit I8 and permit the relief valve 36 to close. The pump I6 will then draw water from the vat I through the conduit 23 and force said water through the conduit i6 and valve I9 and thence through the conduit 3 into the extractor vat 3S.
The water thus entering the vat 38 will force the squeezer or exible bag 50 upwardly to carry the clothes against the undersurface of the cover 55 and as the pressure against the clothes gradually increases, the liquid in the clothes will be forced out of the same and over into the trough 52, and it will then escape through the outlet opening 64 and spout 65 which will direct the water back into the vat I or extraneous to the vat I, depending upon the position of the spout 65.
When the water has been extracted from the clothes, the valve member 22 may be rotated to bring the outlet aperture 26 into communication with each of the outlet openings and 2'I of the valve I9, whereupon the water circulated by the pump ,I6 will pass from the conduit I8 through the valve I9 and back to the pump through the conduit 29 and the water contained in the extractor vat 38 will graduallygravitate downwardly through the conduit and valve I9 and thence pass upwardly through the conduit 28 into the vat I until the water in the vat and in the conduit 30 again reach a common level so that the extractor vat 38 will thus be emptied ir. preparation for the reception of another batch of clothes.
The pump I8 may also be utilized for emptying the vat I- of the water contained therein by rotating the valve member 22 to bring the outlet aperture 24 in communication with the outlet opening or port 26 at which time the water in 5 the vat I will be drawn by the pump I6 through the conduits 28 and 29 and discharged through the conduit I8 and valve I6 and thence out through the conduit 32.
AIt will be noted by referring to Figure 5, that 10 the valve member 22 is provided with a relatively shallow peripheral recess 22 in one side thereof which, when the outlet aperture 26 is in registration with the port 26, will connect the valve outlet openings or ports 25 and21 so that the water l5 contained in the conduit 30 will be drawn therefrom simultaneously with the emptying of the vat I.
In Figure 7, the extractor vat 38 is connected to the upper end of a vertically disposed conduit 20 t9 which extends through a hollow shaft l0 on which the dolly 6 and a portion of its operating mechanism is mounted. In this construction, the conduit 69 has its lower end connected with the conduit 36 connected with the control valve 25 i9, while the upper end of the conduit is externallythreaded for removably engaging an internally threaded boss Il secured to the extractor vat 36, so that the extractor 3l may be conveniently placed in position on the conduitt or 30 removed therefrom.
In the structure disclosed in Figures 1 to 6 inclusive and in Figure 7, the extractor 3i is positioned in eccentric relation with the vat l in which case the cover 5 may extend over only a a@ portion of the upper open end of the vat I leaving a substantially semi-circular opening as I3 at one side of the extractor 3I for permitting easy access to the interior of the vat I for the placing of clothes in the vat I or the removal of the clothes therefrom without the necessity of displacing the extractor 3|. This opening 'I3 may, as shown in Figures 1 and 4, be closed when desired by a suitable lid 'M which rests upon the internal shoulder d of the vat I and upon a flange I3 formed 45 on the cover 5.
In the structure shown in Figures 8, 9, and 10, the extractor vat 38 is positioned substantially coaxially with the vat I in which case the extractor may be provided, as shown, with a plurality of, in this instance t'hree, legs i5 secured by the screws 4l or their equivalent-to the ring member 46. These legs 'I5 are arranged in equal circumferential spaced relation and extend outwardly and downwardly from the ring 46 and are adapted to rest on the shoulder 4 of vat I to hold the extractor vat 38 suspended over vat I and Aco-axially therewith.
In Figure 8, the extractor vat 38 is shown con- 00 nected with the pump I6 by conduits 30 and 69, similarly to the manner shown in Figure 7, except, of course, that the conduit 69 is connected with the bottom of the extractor vat 38 at the center thereof instead of at one side. g5
In Figures 9 and 10, the conduit 30 is shown extended over the top of the vat I and connected to a spout 'i6 eccentrically positioned in the bottom of the extractor vat.
The arrangement shown in Figures 9 and 10 70' may be produced in the extractor vat 38 by fluid in the same manner as described for the structures shown in Figures 1, 4, 7, and 8, and when it is desired to relieve the pressure in the extractor vat, it is only necessary to manipulate the valve I6 to connect the port 21 with the opening in the manner previously described,
whereupon the greater portion of the water in the extractor vat will ow by gravity back into the washer vat I, and any water remaining in the extractor vat or conduit may eventually be drawn therefrom when emptying the washer vat i by the action of the pump in the manner de- -scribed for the structure shown in Figure 4.
Although there has been shown and described -the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is not desired to be limited to the exact structure shown, as various changes both in the form and arrangement of the parts thereof may readily be made without departing from the spirit of this invention as set forth in the appended claims.
We claim: 1. In a combined washing and drying machine,
-a. washing vat, an agitator mounted in said washflexible container, and pressure means for supplying liquid from said washing vat beneath said exible container through said liquid-conveying means.
2. In a combined washing and drying machine, a washing vat, an agitator mounted in said washing vat, means including a hollow shaft for operating said agitator, an extractor vat mounted above said agitator, means for extracting liquid from the clothes comprising a flexible imperforate container mounted in said extractor vat, liquid-conveying means in said hollow shaft opening into the extractor at one side of the iiexible container, pressure means for supplying liquid from said washing vat beneath said flexible container through said liquid-conveying means, and means for returning the extracting water back to the washing vat.
3. In a laundering apparatus, a washing vat having an opening therein, a cover member for said washing vat only partially closing said opening, and an extractor vat supported by said cover member eccentrically of said washing vat and with its side walls in plan view entirely within the cross sectional area of the washing vat.
4. In a laundering apparatus, a washing vat having -a two-part cover, an extractor vat sup- -ported on one part of said cover eccentrically ot 5 -having an opening therein, a cover member for said washing vat only partially closing said washing vat opening, said cover member having an opening therein, an extractor vat supported by. said cover member and extending partly through said cover member opening, said extractor vat having its side walls in plan view entirely within the vcross sectional area of the washing vat.
6. In a laundering apparatus, a washing vat 20 having an opening therein, a cover member for said washing vat only partially closingsaid washing vat opening, said cover member having an opening therein, an extractor vat havingr a exible clothes container supported on said cover 25 member and extending partly through said cover member opening, said yextractor vat having its side walls in plan view entirely within the cross sectional area of the washing vat and being adapted to extract iiuid from the clothes when 30 uld pressure is supplied to said extractor vat beneath said ilexible container.
'7. In a laundering apparatus, a washing vat having an opening therein, a` cover formed in two parts for said washing vat and closing said opening, an extractor vat supported on one of the parts of said cover and having its side walls in plan view entirely within the connes of the cross sectional area of the washing vat and the other of said cover parts being movable to enable access to the washing vat for the insertion or removal of clothes without disturbing the position of said extractor vat.
8. In a laundering apparatus, a washing vat having an opening therein, a cover for said washing vat adapted to close said opening, an extractor vat supported on said cover having means therein for removing water from the clothes, and means in connection with said cover enabling access to the washer vat for the insertion or removal of clothes without disturbing the position of said extractor vat.
