Abstract

664,231. Resilient mountings. THIRY, L. F. Nov. 18,1949 [April 8, 1949], No. 29583/49. Class 108(iii) [Also in Group XXXIV] The invention relates to a method of manufacture of flexible pivotal joints of the kind comprising rigid inner and outer members 1, 2, Fig. 1, having disposed therebe t w e e n under radial compression, a rubber bushing 3, the central portions of the rigid members 1, 2 being subsubstantially cylindrical while the end portions of both members are of reduced diameter, the bushing being compressed between the rigid members at both the central and the end portions thereof. According to the invention, the diameter of the bore of the central portion of the rubber bushing 3 is increased during assembly as compared with its diameter in the free state, in addition to the bushing being radially compressed and axially elongated between the inner and outer members 1, 2, the diameter of the end portions of the outer member 2 then being reduced by a swaging or like operation. The joint is assembled by inserting the bushing 3 via a tapered tube 9a, Fig. 2, into the member 2 and then forcing the member 1 into the bushing 3 behind a tapered leader member (not shown). The ends of the member 2 are then reduced by means of swaging tools 11; or by means of press tools 10 applied simultaneously at each end of the joint. Before assembly the bushing is as shown in Fig. 3; it may, however, be formed at each end of its bore with inwardly projecting annular portions, Fig. 4 (not shown). The dimensions of the parts before and after assembly are preferably such that (D6-D3) is less than (D1-D5). The ends of the member 1 may be threaded as shown, or may be splined and this member may be tubular and internally splined. In a further construction, Fig. 5 (not shown), the member 1 is tubular and held on an inner shaft between a nut and collar on the shaft. One of the members between which the joint is mounted, is secured by a nut to an extension of the shaft on the other side of the collar. The invention may be applied to resiliently mounting tyres on rail-vehicle wheels (see Group XXXIV). According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the ends of the member 2 may be reduced at one end before assembly of the joint. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
