Class 6(ii) [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXIX] A machine for spraying liquid insecticides in orchards or other planted areas of the kind described in Specification 623,068. [Group XXIX], in which the liquid is entrained in air discharged by a fan, has combined therewith at the fan intake a conduit for the air which is vertically extensible to draw down the warmer air above the plants and deliver it near the ground level to protect the plants against frost. In the form shown, an extensible canvas conduit 69 is carried by a trailer hitched to the rear of the spraying vehicle (not shown). The trailer frame 61, 64, 65, Fig. 2, has hinged thereto at 66 a support base 67 for the conduit 69 and the canvas bend 78 with extension 79 for attachment to the fan inlet of the spraying vehicle. For transport, the base 67 is folded to the dotted-line position by a handle 70 through a crank 71 and link 73 which serve, in the operative position shown, to support the base 67. The conduit, Fig. 3, comprises canvas 75 arranged between rings 69 connected by levers 76 shown in three positions corresponding respectively to total collapse, partial extension and full extension. In the last position, the levers serve to lock the rings against collapse. When the frost-protection apparatus is in use, the supply of liquid to the sprayer is cut off. The air may be heated, if desired, by the waste heat from the engine driving the fan. Specification 561,059 also is referred to.
