Abstract

664,192. Navigational systems. STERN, W. L. Feb. 20, 1950 [Feb. 22, 1949], No. 4744/49. Class 40 (iii). A navigational system comprises a transmitter containing a radio-active element propagating radiation in selected directions and a detector carried by a craft responsive to this radiation. In the embodiment shown the radio-active material is mounted on a buoy 2 in a cylindrical shroud 4 of lead provided with openings 5 to allow radiation to pass in certain directions only. The shroud may be rotated or may be stationary and have a rotating mask, coaxial with and provided with apertures so that radiation passes in the directions in which the apertures coincide. The radio-active material may be carried on a container which opens automatically to expose the radio-active material when placed in position in the buoy. For example a cylindrical enclosure may slide over a projection in the buoy leaving the material supported on it. The receiver comprises a number of ionization chambers 6 connected in parallel across an high voltage supply. The chambers may be surrounded by a rotatable mask 9 to make the apparatus directional. The detecting member may carry out a scanning movement in synchronism with the beam of a cathode-ray indicator. The strength of the radiation received measured by conventional arrangements gives an indication of the range of the transmitter. In a modification a naphthalene crystal is arranged to fluoresce under the radio-active rays, a photo-cell responding to the flashes, the rate of flashing giving a measure of the transmitter distance. The transmitter may be movable, an arrangement being mentioned in which it is mounted near the top of a ship's anchor so as to be shrouded when the anchor is not in use or uncovered when it is lowered.-
