The flexible work-embracing band 42, by which a heel H may be maintained in contact with a disc tool 2 for burnishing the edge surfaces of shoe heels, together with its guiding means may be moved into either of two positions, in one of which the heel is maintained in contact with the tool, for burnishing the side edges, and in the other the band and its guiding means are remote from the tool 2, to permit burnishing of the edge surface across the heel breast without fouling of the shoe with the machine. The machine described is generally similar to that of Specification 426,563 as modified by Specification 466,030, the bracket 12 of which is replaced by a somewhat similar lever 14 one end of which is mounted on a shaft 12 carried by a bracket 4 held rigidly on a bearing for the tool 2. A pivoted lever 18, which is held in a position in which it supports the band 42 and its guiding means in contact with the tool for side edge burnishing, on turning a handle 24, is released from engagement with a stepped member 20 on the bracket 4 to permit the lever 14 to fall under gravity about shaft 12 against a spring 54 away from the neighbourhood of the tool 2, where the rolls 36, 38, 40 will be remote from the tool 2 so that the breast surface may be presented to it for burnishing. The latching member 18 may be re-engaged with member 20 by turning handle 24 in reverse direction or by pulling on chain 52 by downward movement on the treadle which actuates a rod such as 20 in Specification 466,030.
