Trimming.-In a machine for trimming the heel ends of insoles or soles, the last is clamped and a knife moves round the heel end of the work to remove surplus material. The last 4, Fig. 1, is clamped between an adjustable support 2 and a lever 8 actuated by a treadle 11. Means may be provided for locking the lever in operative position. A knife 25, Fig. 5, adjustable angularly about a pin 29, is mounted on a slide 15 pressed toward the shoe by a spring 18, a roll 32, on the slide, bearing against the last. The slide is provided with anti-friction rollers 17 and is mounted in an arm 14 having a bearing 14<a> about which it is oscillated to travel about the, heel end of the last and back by a segment gearing with teeth 43. Cam surfaces 37<a> retract the slide, and therefore the knife, at the ends of its travel. The segment is carried at the end of an arm 42, Fig. 1, oscillated by an eccentric 47. This eccentric is driven by bevel gearing 49, 50 from a belt pulley 52, a clutch of known form being controlled by a ring 57 freed by a plunger 56 operated by a starting lever 53, the ring being re-engaged by the plunger, at the end of one revolution of the eccentric, by a cam. In a modification, the knife 25, Fig. 7, has limited free oscillation about a pin 64, and the roll 32 is substituted by a twin shaped sliding member 65.
