Class 103 (ii) In a luggage carrier for vehicles of the kind which includes a support slidably mounted so as to be displaceable rearwardly for loading or unloading or to be retractable into a closed position, the support is slidably operated by a power transmission of such character that over-running at the ends of the stroke of the support is prevented by reverse movement of said support. The carrier comprises the normal compartment at the rear of the vehicle which is provided with an extensible floor comprising three telescoping sections 2, 3, 4, of which the section 2 is fast with the vehicle bodywork and sections 3 and 4 are sliding elements capable of telescoping within the member 2. The section 4 may carry a fixed panel 4a to close the opening in the rear wall 5 of the luggage compartment or in an alternative arrangement a separate lid may be hinged along the top edge of the opening. Side panels may be hinged to the longitudinal edges of the element 4 to be raised when the floor is extended. Each floor section is provided with inter-engaging side rails. In one embodiment the rails are of nesting channel section separated by ball tracks to ensure easy relative movement of the telescoping floor sections. In further embodiments the nesting rails are of circular cross-section. The power transmission comprises a uni-directional electric motor operating a crank and connecting rod coupled to the rear edge of the floor section 4; the length of the crank being one-half the total stroke of the floor elements. The motor may incorporate a friction clutch.
