Abstract

663,773. Printing - machines. GOSS PRINTING PRESS CO., Ltd. (Goss Printing Press Co.). Sept. 23, 1948, No. 24911/48. Class 100 (ii). Inking-apparatus.-In a rotary printing-press wherein the inking apparatus is mounted on a carriage 20, Fig. 1, movable to inoperative position, the apparatus includes a messenger roller 17 carried by an oscillating frame 23, Fig. 2, and a member 30 is provided which can be engaged with the frame 23 so as to hold the roller 17 out of contact with the duct-roller 15 e.g. when the carriage 20 is in inoperative position, the member 30 being actuated by devices controlled electrically in accordance with the movements of the carriage 20. The distributing and transfer rollers 18a ... 18q can thus continue to be driven without receiving an excess of ink. The frame 23 is oscillated by a cam 26 during normal operation of the press, but when the member 30 is moved about its pivot 31 by a double-acting air motor 33 into the position shown in Fig. 2, it swings the frame out of range 'of the cam so that the roller 17 is out of contact with the duct-roller 15. Admission of compressed air from a pipe 38 to either end of the motor 33 is controlled by a valve 36, which is itself controlled by two solenoid-actuated valves 40, 41, one of which is open to exhaust while the other is, closed. The solenoids are connected to the mains through a switch 43, Fig. 5, which is spring-urged to the position shown in full line wherein the valve 41 is opened, air is admitted to the left-hand side of the motor piston and the right-hand side is open to exhaust, and the member 30 is moved to operative position, this occurring when the carriage 20 is in inoperative position. When the carriage is moved to operative position, it swings the switch 43 to the dotted line position, Fig. 5, and the valve 40 is opened so that the member 30 is moved to inoperative position. As shown applied to a multi-colour machine employing three plate cylinders 11, 12, 13, Fig. 1, having identical inking-mechanisms each with its own tripping-member 30 and associated operating- devices, three sets of solenoid-operated valves 40, 41, 50, 51, and 60, 61, Fig. 5, are provided, one for each member 30. The solenoids are normally connected so that the members 30 are actuated simultaneously, but a button-operated double-pole double-throw switch 44, 54, 64, is connected in the circuit of each pair of solenoids so that each messenger roller can be operated normally or tripped independently of the others as may be required for cleaning, changing the ink, or inking the rollers preparatory to starting printing.
