Abstract
663,194. Centrifugal and axial-flow compressors; gas turbine plant. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. March 9, 1950 [Dec. 9, 1948], No. 31926/48. Classes 110(i) and 110(iii) [Also in Group II] A rotating screen extends across the path of the air flowing through the air intake of a compressor, and throws off centrifugally any extraneous matter deposited on the screen by the air. A rotating screen at the intake to the compressor of an aircraft gas turbine engine comprises radial wires 6 carried by the centrifugal impeller 3. Ice or moisture picked up by the wires is thrown off centrifugally into a trough which is drained by a pipe 10 or mechanically scavenged. Hot gas or air may be supplied to the trough to melt the ice and facilitate its removal. A liquid may be supplied by way of passages 11, 12, to wet the wires and may be sticky to entrap dust and instead or in addition be a de-icing fluid. The surface area of the screen may be increased by intermeshing nylon threads with the wires 6. The wires may be round, streamlined or of aerofoil section and may be in two rows, staggered in relation to each other. Vibration of the wires, induced by aerodynamic effects, may be used to dislodge the ice or other fouling matter. The compressor may be of the axial-flow type, and there may be a reduction' gearing between the compressor and the screen. The screen may sweep a larger area than required for the normal passage of the air to allow for the inner part becoming blocked. Where the flow at inlet is radially inwards, the screen may be frusto-conical or cylindrical.
