Class 145 (i) A dovetailing machine having a cutter for cutting recesses between two male dovetails; a single template for controlling the movements of the cutter; and a copying body co-operating with the template mounted on a single control lever which operates both feeding and spacing movements of the cutter, the movements being mutually at right angles and the resultant thereof tracing out the contour of the finished dovetails; has a copying body of continuously increasing diameter and adjustable relatively to the template to vary the size of the dovetails; and a dividing apparatus adapted to produce spacing movement of the cutter in either direction. The control lever 6 carries copying body 5 engaging movable template 1, the control lever being pivoted at 7 on a rotatable, but not slidable, spindle 8, from which the cutter-feeding action is obtained, and connected at 10 to a quadrant 9 for vertical sliding motion, so that spindle 12 is reciprocated and provides the spacing movement of the cutter. The reciprocating movement of spindle 12 is communicated to a dividing apparatus (Fig. 4); the spindle 13 and fixed inclined surfaces 24 forming a wedging space into which rolling bodies 23 are driven by springs 25 such that movement of the spindle 13 towards the narrow end of the space jams rolling bodies 23. As two opposed wedging spaces are provided, movement in either direction of spindle 13 moves body 20 secured to the tool carriage. The plunger 33 may be positioned by lever 22 to relieve the spring pressure on either one of the two rolling bodies 23 so that that rolling body becomes inoperative as a wedge and therefore body 20 moves in one direction only, determined by lever 22; the cutter is spaced along the work for each successive dovetail. When the cutter reaches the limit of its spacing movement in one direction, by operating lever 22 to relieve the other rolling body, the next work can commence from this limit, thus avoiding time-loss due to returning the cutter to its initial position.
