Abstract
662,730. Rolling. MORGAN CONSTRUCTION CO. Dec. 20, 1949 (March 31, 1949], No. 32575/49. Class 83 (iv). [Also in Group XXX] In apparatus for the broadside feeding of metal bars, ingots, plates and the like, upper rearwardly disposed moving skids 46 and lower forwardly disposed moving skids 61 are each associated respectively with upper and lower surfaces 32-35 on fixed skids 25 to provide a stepped fall for separating the bars. The upper surfaces 32, 33 on each of four fixed skids 25 are joined by a forwardly and downwardly sloping face 37 and the lower surfaces 34, 35 are joined by a similar sloping face 42 having a notch 43 at the base below the level of the surface 35. The upper and lower surfaces 33, 34 are similarly joined by a sloping face 38 and notch 39. Each upper moving skid 46 has stepped surfaces 47, 48 joined by a vertical wall 49 and is supported at its rearward end on a roller 51 and at its forward end on a transversely disposed beam 52 mounted on a pair of columns 53 which are pivotally connected to a pair of eccentrics 54 on a shaft 55. Each lower moving skid 61 has stepped surfaces 62, 63, a vertical wall 64 and a notch 66 and is supported at its forward end on a roller 69 and at its rearward end by a second transverse beam 72 and further pair of columns 73 which are also connected to a pair of eccentrics 74 displaced at 180 degrees with respect to the eccentrics 54 on the same shaft 55. The throw of the eccentrics 54 is less than that of the eccentrics 74 and the forward moving skids are further mounted with a downward and rearward inclination in such a manner that only a part of the forward movement at the rearward ends takes place while the surfaces are above the level of the fixed skids. The rate of feed of the ingots is thereby increased as they pass from the upper skids to the lower skids and is further increased progressively as they proceed along the lower skids thereby facilitating the separation of the ingots. Stacks of plates are deposited on the skids by a crane and squared and released as required by an operator raising and lowering a pair of hooked bell-cranks 78 mounted on the two outermost fixed skids and actuated by hydraulic cylinders 80. In falling down the slope 37 the plates are partially separated and in falling over the slope 38 the separation is completed as if two plates fall together the lower plate is engaged by the notch 39 while the upper plate proceeds due to its momentum, the lower plate being released from the notch 39 as the forward moving skid rises. The slope 42 and notch 43 further serve to separate plates and both notches serve to square up the plates engaged therein. Should the notch 43 however be missed due to a plate falling while the forward skid 61 is in the raised position the plate is engaged by the notch 66 in the forward skid and released therefrom as the skid is lowered. The plates finally fall one at a time on to the roller way 21. Should the plates at any time become skewed the rotation of the shaft 55 may be reversed so that the plates move backwards and are squared up by engagement against the faces 37, 38 or 42. Specification 361,668 is referred to.
