PACKER r03 BLOOMS 'AND THE LIKE.
Application filed March 7, 1918. SerialNo. 221,017.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, JOHN WVILLIAM PIEROY, subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 3 Diana street, Crosbyficunthorpegnthe county of Llncolnshire, En land, and J ALIES RAYMOND HOWARD, subject or'the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Tawstock, Cole street, Scunthorpe, in the county of Lincolnshire, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Packer for Blooms and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improved means i for packing or loading together a number of blooms, billets, bars and other similar objects so that such bundle of objects can be more easily handled, the object of the present invention being the provision of means whereby a number of separate articles can be automatically fed to the apparatus and be so placed in position relatively to each other that the whole bundle of articles can be readily handled and the comblnation with such means of provision for enabling a chain, slin or the like to be placed under the bundle of articles.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the 1 mproved packing apparatus provided with feeding rollers. I
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a plan of the same.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line A, B, Fig. 2, showing also a lifting chain or sling. and
Fig. 5 is a section, to an enlarged scale, of part of the machine bed plate.
The drawing illustrates the improved packing apparatus as arranged for the packing of blooms or billets in connectlon with rolling mills, and fitted with feeding rollers.
The bed plate 1 may be of any desired length and width and its upper surface is provided with a number of transverse grooves 2 from the bottom of which the lower face of the groove slopes upwardly in aforward direction toward the too 3 of the next groove. The section of the bed is thus approximately ratchet or saw toothed as shown in Fig. 5, but the shape of the grooves and of the inclines may be varied provided there are no edges or projection which would prevent the forward movement of an article slippingin a forward direction upon such bedandso that there is a clear passage through thegroove when the top opening. thereto is closed by articles upon. the bed. At the sides of the bed there are a number of uprights 4: which are suf- Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented NOV. 16, .1920;
ficiently strong to withstand the strain,
thrown upon them and are so arranged that the spaces 5 between the uprights correspond with the entrances to the grooves 2 in the bed plate and the uprights are preferably so placed or shaped that their vertical edges offer no obstruction to the forward movement of the articles. The upper end of each upright, is, or may be, provided with a
groove 6 or its equivalent for receivin and ositioning a plate 7 which forms an end or abutment to the length of bed in use, and the lower end of the plate 7 may be held in a similar manner. The position of the plate 7 is changed in accordance with the length of the articles to be packed.
The blooms or billets, in the arrangement shown are delivered to the improved apparatus by positively driven
rollers 8 which are constructed, arranged, and driven according to any usual method. The surface speed of these rollersand their height above the bed plate are so designed and arranged that the billets 9, Fig. 1, delivered by the end roller fall into approximately the position shown in Fig. 2, with the center of the billets approximately over the entrance to one of the grooves 2 on the bed plate 1 and at the end of the
roller frame 10 there is an
end plate 11 by which the packed billets are held clear of the end roller when being secured.
The teeth on the upper surface of the bed plate may be integral with such plate or they may be attached thereto and in the latter case are readily replaceable if broken or worn, also the articles to be packed may be delivered by a traveling band, an inclined chute or other equivalent means instead of the feeding rollers.
By means of the apparatus herein described the billets are automatically packed or loaded upon the bed plate 1 and when a suflicient number have been so packed or loaded a chain, sling, or the like 12, Fig. 1, is passed through the groove 2 under such bundle and the bundle is removed by a crane or like means. The chain or sling may however be placed in the groove before the loading or packing is commenced and for longer I articles two or more chains or slings may be used to each bundle.
What we claim as our invention and defrom their bases in a direction away from the feeding device, upright bars at both sides of thebed plate andan end plate for limiting the length of the bed in use substantially as herein set forth.
2. In an apparatus for the packing of blooms or billets, the combination of a feeding device, a bed plate, transverse grooves in the face of said bed plate, said grooves 1 being of ratchet formation lying in a direction away from the feeding device, up-
right bars at both sides of'the bed plate and an adjustable end plate supported by said upright bars and engaging at its lower 1 extremity in any of the grooves.
