Abstract

662,625. Electrolytic purification of water. VELDE, J. C. VAN DER, and FRANZEN, H., [trading as COMMANDITAIRE VENNOOTSCHAP J. C. VAN DER VELDE-H. FRANZEN]. Dec. 19, 1949 [Nov. 29, 1949], No. 32541/49. Class 41. Water for cooling-plants or cold-watersupplying plants is purified by passing electric current simultaneously through copper and aluminium anodes disposed in the water. In a preferred arrangement separately-controllable electric currents are passed through a group of copper anodes and through a group of aluminium anodes, the individual anodes being disposed alternately. The process prevents both the formation of incrustations and the growth of algae on the walls of cooling pipes and the like. The water consumption of a gas cooler in a gas works was from 220 to 1100 gallons per hour, the water initially having a hardness of 80 to 120 milligrams of calcium oxide per litre. A single copper anode comprising two strips of cross-section 13/32 Î 1/8 in. weighing 66 lbs. and two aluminium anodes each comprising the strips of the same crosssection having a total weight of 37.5 lbs. were disposed in the cooler, the outer casing of which was made the cathode. A varying voltage of approximately 10 volts was maintained, the current per anode being 3 to 5 amperes.
