Abstract

662,537. Electrostatic precipitation. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. Nov. 23, 1949 [Nov. 26, 1948], No. 30786/48. Class 39 (i). [Also in Group II] An air or other gaseous fluid cleaning system for removing very small suspended particles from the air or gas, comprises a duct 1 containing in sequence a charged ionizing grid 5, a collector particle distributer 4 and a centrifugal separator 3. The duct 1 is earthed and the grid 5 is supported by insulators 9, 10 carried on spiders 11, 12. The collector particles, which may be liquid or solid, enter the duct through an insulated pipe 14 upstream of the centrifugal separator 3 as shown, or in the region of whirling flow adjacent the separator blades, in which case the collector particles may be injected with a tangential component of motion. In operation, the particles to be removed are ionized by the grid 5 so that they are attracted by the oppositely-charged collector particles and the mixture of particles is centrifuged in the separator 3 to the duct wall where the particles may be tapped off through an annular slot (not shown). The separator 3 may be of the cyclone type such as that of Specification 639,896, [Group II], or alternatively of the non-rotary centrifugal type as described in Specification 640,070, [Group II].
