Abstract

662,421. Corrugating. PACKMAT AKT.-GES. OLTEN. Dec. 14, 1949 [Aug. 12, 1949], No. 32105/49. Class 83 (iv). [Also in Groups V and VII] A method of manufacturing corrugated inserts of cardboard, metal, &c., especially for use in boxes containing ampoules, comprises placing a flat strip of material on a frame of rods arranged in parallel spaced relationship transversely to the length of the strip, pressing the material between the rods by means of slidable members to form the corrugations and subsequently securing it by adhesive to a further flat strip. Apparatus for carrying out the invention comprises a shaft 11, Fig. 1, driven from a motor 4 through belts 6, 9 co-operating with pulleys 5, 7, 8, 10. The shaft 11 carries a pair of eccentric discs 12 and further eccentrics 13 to 15 against which latter bear;the ends of three levers 16 ... 18, pivotally mounted on a shaft 19 and carrying at their other ends members 20 ... 22 vertically slidable in guides 23. Bearing on each of the eccentrics 12 is a roller 26 attached to a lever 27, the free ends of the levers being linked to a carrier 28 controlled by a spring 29. A pawl 30 is connected to each side of the carrier, the upper end of each pawl being slidable along a guideway 31. The frame, which comprises two longitudinal bars 34 and cross bars 35, supports a strip 36, Fig. 4, and is pushed beneath guide rods 24 until the pawls 30 engage a first pair of pins 32. The cam lobes 13a ... 15a cause the levers 16 ... 18 to depress the slides 20 ... 22 in turn between the rods and subsequently raise them to form successively three corrugations in the strip. Then the cam lobes 12a rock the levers 27 so that the carrier 28 moves against the action of the spring 29 and the pawls 30 engage the next pair of pins 32 thus moving the frame a distance corresponding to three rods, further corrugations then being formed. Thecorrugated strip subsequently passes beneath a pressure roller to secure it to a flat strip by means of adhesive.
