Abstract
662,352. Syringe holders. MAYNES, E. C. Feb. 17, 1949, No. 4353/49. Class 81 (ii). A device for operating hypodermic syringes in an automatic manner comprises a holder having an elongated stationary trough for supporting and guiding the syringe cylinder and an actuator movable in the trough and in engagement with the syringe plunger in order to slide the cylinder forward along the trough to project the needle, a stop on the holder limiting said sliding of the cylinder to cause the plunger to be moved in the cylinder by continued movement of the actuator. As shown, Figs. 1, 4, the device comprises rotatably connected telescopic members 10, 11 forming an elongated receptacle 12 for the syringe 13, the ends of the syringe cylinder being provided with flats 13b, 13d, in order that the syringe may be inserted into the holder as shown in Figs. 5, 6. The member 11 contains a spring loaded slidable actuator 17 the front end of which is provided with a cushion 17a engagable with the cylinder plunger 15. Retraction of the actuator against the spring 18 is by manual pressure on the detent 17b. The rear end of member 11 has a hollow tube 19 provided with a central rod 20 which, as shown in Fig. 9, is used to facilitate the transfer of liquid from a vial 30 to the syringe 13 the metal cap 32 covering the rubber seal of the vial, being first punctured by a point 26a on the adjustable securing means between the member 10 and the forked skin-engaging element 25. Pressure on the needle 14 engaging the vial causes the rod 20 to actuate the piston 31. Adjustment of the length of the holder is effected by the engagement of an external lug on the member 10 with one of a plurality of longitudinally spaced recesses formed in the member 11. On assembly of the members the lug enters the slot 11a and by rotation of member 10 moves circumferentially around the recess 11f which opens into a longitudinal recess on the side of member 11. The spaced recesses open out into this recess and engagement of the lug with a selected spaced recess is effected when the lug is in the longitudinal recess by further rotation of the member 10. In operation the catch 23 is depressed, thereby releasing the actuator 17 which moves the syringe bodily forward until the flange 13c contacts the resilient stop 34 when the needle 14 has penetrated the patient's skin. Continued movement of the actuator then expels the liquid from the syringe. A further embodiment, Fig. 14, comprises two telescopic members 36, 39, the member 39 being urged rearwardly of the member 36 by a spring 43. This withdrawal member 39 carries at its forward end a resilient stop 34 and on depression of the catch 53 it moves rearwardly causing the stop 34 to engage the syringe flange 13c, thereby effecting the withdrawal of the needle from the patient. Rearward movement of the member 39 is limited by a lug 40 slidable in a longitudinal recess 36b formed in the member 36. The actuator 45 is provided with teeth 45a for engagement with the spring- loaded operating catch 51 depression of which releases the actuator and causes automatic syringe injection. In another embodiment, similar to that shown in Fig. 14, operation of the syringe is entirely automatic, pressure on the forked skin-engaging element causing a longitudinal rod to disengage the catch from the teeth on the actuator. The actuator is provided at its rear end with a cam which is engagable with a catch fastened to a member similar to 36 in Fig. 14 and which holds the withdrawal member against rearward movement. When the injection is completed the cam operates this catch, causing the withdrawal member to effect withdrawal of the needle from the patient.
