Abstract
661,878. Botting. STALLER, J. May 12, 1948, No. 13063/48. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Dec. 5, 1948.] Class 125(ii). In a method of filling bottles in inverted positions with liquid under pressure with the use of a protective gas heavier than air, gas in the bottle forced out by incoming liquid is passed to a chamber from which the air content escapes into the atmosphere and the heavier protective gas is retained for re-use in the system. A bottle 1 is pressed in inverted position against a filling head 5 by a holder 3, with the end of one limb 10 of a movable U-tube within the filling head so that its lateral apertures 11 are closed and the other limb 12 extending through a cylinder 14 depending from superposed gas chambers 16, 17 supplied through an inlet 22 under about 2 atmos. pressure with protective gas of higher specific gravity than air. By admission of compressed air into cylinder 14 a piston 13 and with it the U-tube is raised until limb 10 reaches the bottom of the bottle. Pressure is thus equalized in the bottle, gas chambers and the gas space 24 of a liquid reservoir 6 communicating with chamber 16, so that on a valve 8 being opened liquid flows into the bottle and air, and later gas, is displaced into chamber 17, When the bottle is full valve 8 is closed, the U-tube retracted and the bottle removed, the internal pressure causing the internal ball 2 to seal the mouth. As the liquid level in reservoir 6 descends a valve 21 connected to a float 25 opens chamber 17 to the atmosphere, allowing air to escape and the pressure drop provides for inflow of liquid through an inlet 26. The U-tube is so dimensioned that the volume of the immersed portion with the bottle full is greater than the liquid content of both limbs so that this liquid is sucked into the bottle as the tube is withdrawn. Remaining traces are ejected through a blow-out valve 27 with the tube in its lowest position. Specification 658,613 is referred to.
