Abstract
661,751. Automatic cop changing in looms. MACKIE & SONS, Ltd., J., and PRINGLE, A. Feb. 13, 1950 [Jan. 5, 1949], No. 328/49. Class 142(iii). When depletion of a solid cop is detected, a hook controlled by the cop feeler, or forming-part of it, extracts the remnant of the cop from the shuttle; on the next pick, weft is drawn from the cop remnant by the shuttle (which remains threaded) until it is halfway across the loom, when the weft is cut, the end left trailing from the shuttle being sufficient to complete the pick. A fresh cop is inserted into the shuttle at the opposite end of the loom. Cop feeler, Fig. 2. A feeler 23 is normally pushed forward by the cop at beat up but remains in the position shown when the cop collapses; the shuttle then strikes a screw 49, thereby releasing a latch 43 from a tooth 29 on a hook 6 pivoted on the feeler; the hook is swung into the end of the cop by a spring 39 acting through toothed gearing 33, 31. As the slay recedes, leaving the cop remnant on the hook, a striker on the slay engages a dog 38 to return the mechanism to the position shown. In another form, a hook acts as the feeler and, when it penetrates a depleted cop, is turned slightly by the shuttle striking a lateral projection on the feeler, whereupon a spring swings the feeler so that the hook takes hold of the cop. Cutting weft, Fig. 4. When the cop extractor operates, a hook 55 is lowered into the path of a finger 64 so that as the slay recedes a scissor blade 61 is raised and held by a latch 66 engaging a tooth 69; the yarn running from the extracted cop to the shuttle passes between the blade 61 and a fixed blade 59 until, as the slay continues its rearward movement, a striker 70 encounters a stop 72, thereby tripping the latch, whereupon the weft is cut. In another construction, the weft is guided by a hook which is displaced by a striker (similar to the striker 70) to press the weft against a single blade fixed on the slay. Controlling cop inserter. When the scissors, Fig. 4, are cocked, a cable 78 raises a striker 80, Fig. 6, into line with a dog 88 on the cop inserting hammer. As the slay beats up and operates the hammer, the dog swings to the position shown in chain line, thereby depressing the striker 80 sufficiently for over-centre action of a spring 84 to return it to its inactive position. In another construction, Fig. 9, an arm 131 lifts a dog 139 into the path of a striker 140, in which position it is held by a spring-loaded latch 133; immediately before the striker 140 operates the dog, it pushes the latch forward, so that the arm 131 drops down a slot 132 to allow the dog 139 to fall to its inactive position after the transfer hammer has been operated. Shuttles, Fig. 2. The shuttle has an opening in the front for entry of the feeler and extraction of the cop end, and a steel plate 50 for striking the screw 49.
