Abstract

661,531. Cables. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Oct. 11, 1949 [Nov. 6, 1948], No. 26039/49. Class 36. [Also in Groups XIII and XXXV] The evaporation of a liquid fluorocarbon flowed over a conductor disposed in a casing cools the conductor and the evolved gases provide an electrically insulating atmosphere. As shown, the core 18 and coils 20 of a transformer 10 enclosed in a casing 12 are cooled by the fluorocarbon spray 42 from a device 40, and, following evaporation, the insulating gas condenses on the casing walls and in a radiator 44 to return to a sump 28 for recirculation by a pump 34. The casing also contains nitrogen. Many examples of fluorocarbons are given and the characteristics of one, perfluormethylcyclohexane, are described in the Specification. The invention is also applicable to switch-gear, capacitors, generators, cables, reactors, &c.
