Abstract

661,506. Vehicle spring suspensions. KRONPRINZ AKT.-GES. FUR METALLINDUSTRIE. STEINBORN, B., and BONSCH. H. W. June 23, 1949 [Dec. 23, 1948]. No. 16766/49. Class 108(iii) Cycle forks of the type which are telescopic and have a resilient buffer column disposed therein, the buffer column consists of a plurality of solid rubber cylindrical elements having coupling means disposed in their end faces. The coupling means may comprise discs vulcanized to the end faces of the rubber elements and provided alternately with screwed pins and threaded sockets. Clearance between the rubber elements and the containing tube may be so arranged that on compression of the column, and hence expansion of the individual rubber elements, the expanded elements contact the inner wall of the containing tube to exercise a damping action. Fig. 2 shows a motor cycle fork comprising inner telescopic tubes 11<SP>1</SP> joined to the steering head 9' by yokes 7<SP>1</SP>, . 8'. The outer tubes 10<SP>1</SP> carrying the wheel spindle in brackets 27 and are joined by a bridge piece .8 to which the mudguard may be attached. The tubes 10<SP>1</SP> and 11' telescope with the aid of guide bushes 13<SP>1</SP>, 14<SP>1</SP> and are sealed against the entry of dirt by bellows 35. A tubular piston member 30 is secured to the bracket 27 and slides within the inner tube 11<SP>1</SP>; fixed to the top of piston 30 is a column of rubber 23 having vulcanized therein at intervals guide discs 24. The top of the rubber column is preferably secured at 25 to the yoke 7<SP>1</SP>, whereby the rubber can act in tension as well as compression. Alternatively, a series of separate rubber elements may be used and fastened together, as shown in Fig. 4, by end plates 18, 19 vulcanized to the rubber and having screwed pins 21 set in a recess, and co-acting threaded holes 22 also set in a recess. The rubber elements may be cylindrical, or with a concave profile as in Fig. 4, or with an enlarged central diameter 36, Fig. 5, to obtain different degrees of damping. The damping effect may also be varied by using rubber of different characteristics, and elements of several kinds of rubber may be used together. -
