Abstract

A bituminous composition comprises asphalt and 5 to 95 per cent of a polymer of a substituted or unsubstituted unsaturated nitrile or an interpolymer of two or more such nitriles. The nitriles are of the general formula <FORM:0660885/IV (a)/1> where R may be hydrogen, a hydrocarbon radical or chlorine or bromine, e.g. a -methyl, ethyl, butyl, b -propyl, or a ,b -dimethyl acrylonitriles, crotonitrile, a - phenyl, naphthyl, chloro, bromo, or a ,b -di-chloro or cyclohexyl acrylonitrile, or <FORM:0660885/IV (a)/2> , where <FORM:0660885/IV (a)/3> may also represent a phenylene, cycloalkylene or pyridine ring, are used. A solution of the composition in, for example, ketones, aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, and brominated or chlorinated hydrocarbons or an aqueous dispersion thereof, which may contain stabilizers, caseinates or alginates, soluble alkaline hydroxides, e.g. alkali or alkaline earth metal or ammonium hydroxides or quaternary nitrogen bases, clay, anion or cation active emulsifiers, e.g. alkaline solutions of metal salts or soaps of tall oil, alkali metal rosinates, sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium oleate, or ammonium stearate, may be used as coatings for asphalt roadway compositions including those containing natural rubber or polymers of diolefine hydrocarbons. Plasticizers, e.g., butadiene-methacrylonitrile copolymers, fillers, waxes, cation active materials, resins or phenyl b -naphthylamine may be included in the composition. Cloth, paper, concrete, bricks, glass, porcelain, ceramics, sand, clay, bentonite, carbon black, and particles of rubber may be impregnated or coated and may be fixed and impermeabilized by addition of ethyl formate to the aqueous dispersion.
