Abstract

660,863. Filters. FRAM CORPORATION. May 16, 1949, No. 12984/49. Class 46 A filter for the separation of ice crystals from liquid hydrocarbons such as kerosene or gasoline fuel oils comprises a flexible filtering element, which is hydrophobic but permeable to the hydrocarbon liquid and is such that when accumulation of ice crystals on the element obstructs flow of liquid through the element, the element on account of increased differential pressure thereacross will flex and dislodge the ice crystals therefrom. As shown braided fibre glass tubes 17 treated with some water and ice repellent chemical such as a silicone or a stearate such as barium stearate, are located in a chamber 10 between the inlet conduit 15 and outlet conduit 14 across which a differential pressure is maintained. The tubes 17 are preferably collapsable and sufficiently elastic to regain their shape after collapsing and are provided with means such as weights 22 to rock the filters in the chamber by virtue of the passage of liquid through the chamber. Each tube 17 may alternatively or additionally be provided with a pin extending outwardly from its surface and/or with a plate at its lower end to cause the swinging movement of the tube. Due to the accumulation of ice thereon the tubes collapse, thereby breaking the ice which action is assisted by the swinging movement of the tubes, the ice dropping to the bottom 25 of the chamber. At this location a heater 26 is installed to supply sufficient heat to melt the ice thus formed that the resulting water may be drawn off through the valve 27.
