Application filed November 24, 1919. Serial No. 340.1%.
T0 of! rel/0m Iif'NNlj/ concern Be it known that l. lloinurr .M. :ul'l'ILl/ER, a citizen of the lhiited States. residing at New York, in the county of how York and State oi New York. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'i-iir l rap Gasoline Strainers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to straining dc vices for removing sediment from gasoline and more particularly relates to a gasoline strainer for automobiles. 7
One important object of the invention is to improve the general construction of dcvices of this character. i
A second important object of the invention is to provide an improved -form of gasoline vstrainer tor automobiles, so arranged that the ordinary running of the automobile will act to keep the strainer element from clogging.
A third important object oi the invention to so improve devices of this character that there will always be a certain amount oi air above the gasoline in the strainer chamber whereby the gasoline may move freely about in such chamberand thus wash the face of the strainer element.
dith the above and other objects in view. as will be hereinafter apparent the inven; tion consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations or": parts hereinafter tally described. illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specitically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and
Figure l. is a front elevation of the improved device,
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, I
Figure 3 ifia seection on the line 83 0t Figure 2.
in the embodiment of the invention shown. and; which is to be taken as merely a typical form, there is provided a casing 10, preferably having a glass front 11. in the bottom oi this casing is a clean out plug 12 provided with a central pipe threaded.
opening 13, wherein may be fitted a pet cook or plug as desired. Extending dew Ward through the top of the casing andternrinating at a point just above the center of the casing is an inlet pipe 14, wl'nle sunilar outlet pipe 15 extends upward through the top from a point on a level with the end of the inlet pipe 1. Screwed on 'or other wise secured to the outlet. pipe is plate 16 from which depends a strainer 1'5, extending well below the mouth of the outlet pipe and also well above said mouth.
lly reason of this arrangement, the upper part of the chamber within the casing acts as an air chamber since the normal level. of the gasoline can rise but little above the mouth of the inlet and outlet pipes. (onsequently, when the device is installed on an automobile between the tank and the earbu-.
rctcr, and the machine is running. the gasoline in the lower part of the casing will wash around in the casing. thus setting up currents across the faces of the strainer proper and preventing the accumulation of sediment on such faces with its attendant result oi clogging the strainer and choking or preventing the flow of gasoline therethrough.
There has thus been provided a simple and ellicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
it is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction oi the invention without departing from the material let pipe extending downward from the top" of the casing and terminating slightly above the center of the casing an outlet pipe extending upward through the casing from the level oi the end of the inlet pipe, 21 plate carried by the outlet pipe, a strainer carried by the plate and surrounding the mouth of the outlet pipe, and a cleaning plu in the bottom of the casing.
2. in a devlce of the character described comprising a casing, an inlet and an outlet v pipe in communication with said casing having the outlet and inlet ends of said respective pipes terminating in a-common plane slightly above the center of the casing, and a drain in the bottom of said casin 3. In a device of the character describet comprising a casing,an,inlet and an outlet io tive pipes terminating in a. common plane slightly above the center of the casing, a filtering means asseciated with the outlet pipe "ing the outlet and inlet ends of said respec' tivepipes terminating 111 a common plane slightly above the center of the casing, a
strainer mounted on the outlet pipe and extending eeeve and below the inlet end thereof, and e drain in the bottom of the easiiw.
5. gasoline filtering device comprising a sealed easing, means for maintaining a constant level of gesoiine within said. casing beiew the top thereof consisting of an inlet and an outlet pipe terminating in a common plane siigl'itiy above the center of the casing, astrainer Between the terminal ends of said pipes Within the casing, and a cleaning plug in the batten; of said casing.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
