May 29, 1925:a y Y www?) H.DEEKS GASOLINE FILTER Filed April 14. 1922 fn ven for,
HA EE Patented May 29, 1923.
UNITED STATES HUGH ALLEN DEEKS, OF TRONTO, DNTARIO, CANADA.
GASOLINE FILTER.
Application led .April 14, 1922. Serial No. 552,543.
T all whom t may concern.
lBe it known that lI, HUGH ALLEN Drains., a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, Province of Ontario, Canada. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gasoline Filters, of which the following is the specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gasoline filters pertaining more particularly to filters applicable to use between the gasoline tank and the carburetor of a motor vehicle and acting as a purifying device for the gasoline to enable the carburetor to be supplied with clean fuel.
A further object is to devise means whereby upon the gasoline in the filter easing reaching a predetermined level it will be permitted to'flow through the outlet without passing through the filtering medium which is impervious to water..
A still further obect 1s to devise means for holding the different removable portions of the filtering unit in their co-related positions in the casing.
My invention consists of a gasoline filter constructed and arranged all as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 represents a side elevation of a filter constructedl according to my invention showing the means for mounting it on the vehicle.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section through the filter showing the filtering unit in section therein.
Fig. 3 is a frontI elevation of the filter casing with the casing closure and the adjusting collar removed to expose the filteringmedium impervious to water which is broken away to expose the screen of the bypass and the main filtering screen. and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the adjusting collar.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different views..
1 is the casing which is constructed with one end wall of substantially semi-elliptical shape and the other vend open and provided with an outwardly extending peripheral flange .2 outwardly inclined to the vertical from top to bottom.
3 is a gasoline inlet'from the gasoline storage tank suitably positioned in the casing as is illustrated in F ig. 2., such casing being indented so that the longitudinal axis of the inlet nipple will lie substantially horizontal. i t is a drain plug in the bottom of the casing adapted to be screwed into the boss 5 which is provided with suitably extending orifices 6 in order that any dirt or deposit from the gasoline falling to the bottom of the casing will be expelled therefrom upon the plug l being removed. 7 is a shoulder constituted in the casing, the plane of the shoulder being substantially parallel to the flange 2.
8 is a metal gauze screen partition eX- tending across the casing 1 and seated on the shoulder 7. 9 is a chamois-carrying ring provided with an outwardly extending bead 10 at its outer end and with an outwardly extending flange 11, at its inner end, said flange engaging the Screen 8 and seating it firmly on the shoulder 7 upon the ring being placed in position. y
12 is a chamois extending over the beaded end 10 of the ring 9 and 13 is a double metal gauze screen of U-shaped cross section eX- tending over the by-pass orifice 14 in the top of the ring 9. i
15 is an annular chamois Supporting ring seating collar provided with a convexed outer end with an orifice therein, said collar engaging the outer side of the flange 11 of the ring 9 and its convexed end engaging the casing closure 16 which is provided with a peripheral flange 17 adapted to be applied to the aforesaid casing flange 2, a suitable washer' being interposed between the two flanges to seal the same. The closure is held in engagement with the casing by means of the cap screws 19 being threaded through the flanges 17 and 2 respectively. 2O is a centrally located gasoline outlet in the closure 16.
21 is a bracket secured to the flange 2 and adapted to support the filter' casing on the vehicle in the Vposition illustrated in Figs. l and 2.
22 is an inwardly extending rib 'formed in the top of the casing 1 between the shoulder 7 and its outlet end, said rib adapted toengage a notch 23 inthe top of the flange 11 of 'the ring Sl for preventing the ring turning out of its correct position in which bj dass is situated at thc top thereof.
device operates as follows ,en the gasoline is fed in through the inlet .into thev casing l. any dirt or the `vented from reaching like will he caught by the screen 8 and deposited in the casing l and drained off` by removing the plug l. ltis to be noted that owing to the inclination of the screen particles of dirt and other foreign matter/ llt is found that when chamois is newand for the first couple ot' months ot' its use that it has a tendency to prevent the free flowing of the gas therethrough to the outlet 2O and such difficulty is overcome hy providing the by-pass la which will per-l mit the gasoline aftenpassing through the screen 8 to pass through the double screen 13, through the ivy-pass lslto the outside of the ring and outwardly between the ou'tside of the ring and the inside ofthe adjusting collar l5 to the outlet 2d. This is of course only possible when the gasoline in the casing has reached a sufficient height but this height is soon reached when the chamois diaphagm 12 is blocked, and the gasoline fills the inlet side of the casing. This by-pass would also be of a `l\f'antage where gasoline with an excess of water is used and then such vater would have a tendency to block the pores of the chamois and prevent the gasoline flowing freely therethrough to the outlet.
. The chamois supporting ring seating collar l5 is provided with the orifice 1.6 therein so that owing to the fact that it is constructed of very thin flexible material the closure 16 can be drawn down into position where the adjusting collar 15 will engage the collar 9 as above described. thus properly seating the ring 9 and holding the screen 8 in position on the shoulder T.
fifi
lFrom the aloove description it will he seen that l have devised a simple and effective gasoline filter which in addition to filtering the impurities out of the gasoline will provide means for permitting the gaso line to reach the outlet end under emergeney conditions should the chamois hecome blocked.
l/Tlhat lf claim as my invention is:
l. iln gasoline filters. the combination with a Casing having a gasoline inlet in one end and a gasoline outlet in the other. of a filtering unit mounted in the casing comprising spaced apart filtering media. one of which is impervious to water. and a by-pass for allowing the gasoline to reach the outlet witln out passing through the filtering medium impervious to vater. upon such gasoline reaching a predetern'iined level in the casing.
