Abstract
660,719. Transmutation of elements. NAHMIAS, M. E. May 25, 1949 [May 31, 1948], No. 13986/49. Class 39 (iv). A method of treating a gem to effect a permanent change of its colour and other physical characteristics comprises subjecting the gem to the irradiation of a neutron flux having an energy and density high enough to effect transmutation of the impurities of the gem but not so high as to affect adversely the basic ingredient of the gem. The process may be applied to a diamond to change its colours or hardness; in this case neutrons of an energy less than 20 Mev. should be used to avoid transmutation of the carbon. The diamonds may be placed in a 1000 Kw. atomic pile and irradiated for a time between a few weeks and a year. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 suggests that diamonds may be used as a moderator for neutrons in an atomic pile. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
