Abstract

660,182. Electric measuring devices. SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIV-UND MASCHINENFABRIK. July 19, 1949. [Aug. 6, 1948] No. 18950/49. Class 40 (i). [Also in Group XL (b)] In a piezo-electric device for measuring pressure, e.g. in an engine cylinder, the crystal unit comprises two juxtaposed semi-cylindrical quartz rods 1, 2, having their neutral axis 3 parallel to the pressure axis i.e. the rod axis, and their electrical axes 4, Fig. 2 oppositely poled and standing at right angles to the plane of separation. Thus only positive charges, for example, are set up on the curved surfaces of the rod which are earthed through the sleeve 5 accommodating the crystal rod. The charges set up on the plane adjacent crystal faces are taken up by a thin copper separating strip 9 and fed through a conductor 10 to a contact 11 in an amber insulating bushing 12. The crystal rod is prestressed axially between steel cylinders 6 tightly fitted in the sleeve 5 and the lower end 5b of the sleeve which takes the gas pressure. The tapered outer surface of the upper end of the sleeve 5 fits a correspondingly tapered bore of the casing 7 and is secured at its lower end by the peripheral bead of a diaphram 8 formed on the sleeve, which is rolled gastight in the foot of casing 7. Coolant water may be supplied through ducts-13 to the thin walled portion 5a of the sleeve 5 and a drying substance 14 absorbs any moisture present at assembly, or which may penetrate from the coolant chamber into the quartz chamber. The sleeve wall 5a is made thin at 5a where it embraces the crystal to enhance sensitivity, but in a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown) this wall is made thicker but corrugated.
