Abstract

660,140. Supply systems for discharge tubes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 7, 1948 [Oct. 10, 1947], No. 26178/48. Class 38 (iv). A supply system for a discharge tube 1, such as a fluorescent lamp, for use on a motor vehicle, comprises a variable speed alternator 8, which may be driven by the motor 9 of the vehicle, provided with automatic voltage control and feeding the tube through a ballast consisting of a choke 10 and resistor 11 in series. The resistor may be tungsten filament lamp. The nominal frequency of the alternator may be 450 cycles per second, being variable over the range of 80-700. To facilitate striking of the tube an external starting strip 5 may be provided, with or without a condenser 14 for effecting a " resonant " start at any desired frequency. The condenser may be disconnected by a glow discharge switch 13 when the tube strikes.
