A device for effecting dustfree emptying of buckets into refuse vehicles comprising means adapted to enclose the mouth of the bucket whilst the latter is tipped to empty its content into the vehicle, said means including a closure plate for the bucket pivoted on the vehicle and against which the upper end of the bucket is adapted to be pressed so that an opening in the plate registers with the mouth of the bucket is characterised in that said closure plate is provided with a contractible and extensible cradle for the bucket and the device includes means both for effecting lengthwise adjustment of the cradle and for retaining it in the contracted condition, said cradle when contracted, pressing the upper end of the bucket tightly against the closure plate. As shown, the closure plate 4 having an opening 5 for receiving the mouth of a bucket, is supported by a shaft 3 on the tiltably rear part 2 of the refuse vehicle and carries a hood 6 which in turn is connected by a hinge 7 to a cover 8 pivotally mounted at 9 on a wall 10. At each side of these parts 4, 6, 8, are protecting walls 12. The carrier 16 for the bucket is secured to a pair of rods 15 which engage in guides 14 secured to the plate 4 and is raised so as to press the rim 23 of a pail against the plate 4 by a strap 21 which is pivotally mounted at 21b on the guides 14 and connected through arm 21a and stays 22 to the carrier. To empty a bucket, it is placed on the carrier 16 between stops (not shown) so as to rest on an arm 18 rigid with the carrier, and the strap 21 is then rocked from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that in Fig. 3. During this movement, the carrier 16 is raised so as to press the bucket rim 23 against the plate 4 and is held in this position by the arms 21a of the strap having been swung slightly beyond their dead centre position. An eye 25 on the bucket lid 24 engages a hook 26 pivotally mounted on the hood 6. When the bucket is now tipped about the shaft 3 to the position shown in Fig. 4, the hood 6 and cover 8 are turned about their hinges and the lid 24 is raised from its seat by the hook 26 so that refuse in the bucket falls through the opening 30 to the vehicle. The bucket may be tipped by hand or the shaft 3 may be rotated by a motor such as the vehicle engine.
