Abstract

Adhesives suitable for securing embossed ductile metal foil to a rigid backing-plate (see Groups VIII and XVI) consist of alkyd resins or mixtures containing them; hardenable phenol-formaldehyde condensation products with a polyvinyl acetal; and mixtures of (a) a polyhydric phenol derivative containing at least two ethylene oxide groups; and (b) a hardening agent. Examples of (a) are the polyhydric phenols in which two benzene nuclei are connected by a methylene group, e.g. 4 : 41-dihydroxy-diphenyl-methanes. Examples of (b) are the polybasic acid anhydrides, acid anhydrides produced by diene synthesis from maleic anhydride and unsaturated compounds, inorganic or organic bases such as caustic soda, calcium oxide, sodamide, guanidine, diphenylguanidine, piperidine, triethanolamine, piperazine, hexamethylene tetramine, hydrazo-dicarbonimide or salts thereof, cyanamide or its polymerization products, melamine, liquid polyamines such as ethylene diamine or triethylene tetramine and liquids obtained therefrom by heating with dicyandiamide or aromatic diamines; solid hardening agents dissolved in non-volatile solvents may also be used, or mixtures of any of the above hardening agents among themselves or with solvents, ground slate, wood meal, &c. An interposed fibrous layer is in one embodiment coated with liquid phenol-formaldehyde condensation product (A-stage) and then sprinkled with polyvinyl-formal powder; in another is saturated with a solution, in acetone, of an alkyd resin of acid number about 40 (obtained from the condensation of phthalic anhydride and glycerol) with or without an addition of hexamethylol melamine hexamethyl ether; in another is coated with a mixture of triethylene tetramine with a resin solution consisting of cyclohexanol, dibutyl phthalate and a derivative of 4 : 41-dihydroxydiphenyl-dimethyl-methane containing at least two ethylene oxide groups.
