Abstract
659,681. Drying matrices. BAKER, C. C. Aug. 22, 1949, No. 21760. [Class 100 (ii)] A matrix preliminary drying and shrinking cabinet 3 which effects a greater measure of shrinkage than usual, comprises a vacuum chamber 1 with a perforated surface 2 carrying the matrix 27 held by a pair of longitudinal disengageable pressure-bars 23 normally urged inwardly and which after travelling a predetermined distance cause an actuator to engage a control device 40 which switches off the cabinet heating means and stops an airexhaust mechanism connected to the chamber 1. The cabinet 3 has a hinged door 24 through which the matrices are placed on the chamber 1 situated below the heating means comprising a number of infra-red lamps 36 mounted parallel to the matrix and on a housing 48 vertically adjustable in the cabinet. An opening 12 at the base of the cabinet allows access to a pedal 29 connected to a pair of rods 30 urged upwardly by springs 32, adjustable for pressure by means of nuts 34. The upper end of each rod 30 is connected to links 28 attached at their other ends to rocker arms 13 pivotally mounted on brackets 16 fixed to the chamber 1. Each arm 13 comprises an upper tubular section containing a spring-plunger 17, the end of which carries a transverse pin 22 engaging the pressure-bars 23 which thus hold the matrix in contact with the upper surface 2 and are urged inwardly through the rocking of arms 13 by the springs 32. Attached to one arm 13 is a pointer 44, Fig. 5, extending through a slot 45 in the cabinet 3 and indicating on a scale 46 thereon the amount of the inward shrinkage movement. The amount of shrinkage is predetermined by adjusting an actuator, attached to the upper end of one of the rods 30, so that when it contacts the control switch 40 the lamps 36 are extinguished and an air-exhaust motor 8 driving a blower 4 connected to the vacuum chamber 1, is switched off. The final stage in the drying and shrinking is effected in customary moulding apparatus.
