Abstract
659,471. Conveyers. HAPMAN, H. W. Aug. 23, 1949, No. 21852. [Class 78 (i)] A conveyer structure comprises a circuitous conveyer conduit having at least one abrupt bend, a flight conveyer movably mounted in the conduit and having an endless flexible propelling member with spaced conveyer flights mounted thereon, a housing interposed in the bend of the conveyer conduit, the housing having an inlet in the upper portion thereof and an outlet in the lower portion thereof for the entrance and exit respectively of the flight conveyer, a material slide extending downwardly from the inlet toward the outlet, and upper and lower guide wheels journalled one below the other in the housing and positioned to guide the flight conveyer in a sinuous path away from the material pathway down the slide between the inlet and outlet, the lower guide wheel being positioned near the lower portion of the slide for directing the flight conveyer into close proximity to the slide whereby to again pick up the conveyed material which has slid down the slide after the material freed conveyer has passed around the guide wheels and convey the regained material outward from the housing through the outlet. As shown in Fig. 1, the material is conveyed in a closed conduit and is discharged through apertures 5a to hoppers 5b into a series of hoppers 19, 20 and 21 connected by shoots to the conduit 6. At the upper bends houses 11 and 12 enclose guides for the conveyer. As shown in Fig. 2, the material passes up conduit 33 connected to conduit 7 and into a housing 11 and falls down a shoot 39 into conduit 37 connected to conduit 5 while the conveyer passes round a sprocket and idle pulley in the housing. The housing has side, end and top members 30, 31 and 32. The upper sprocket is adjustable by means of members 53 by nuts 55 engaging therewith. The members 53 engage slide members 43 secured to the side member 30 and having slots 40 so that the sprocket mounted on a shaft 41 in bearings 42 in the side members can be adjusted vertically. A similar arrangement in housing 12, Fig. 5, has the upper sprocket 93 driven by a belt 101 from a motor 97 and the material entering by conduit 95 flows to the conduit 102, whereas the conveyer passes round guide sprocket 93 and pulley 105. A further arrangement is shown in Fig. 9 in which the conveyer passes round sprockets 159, 173 and split pulley 152 and the material flows from a loading hopper 120 to a discharge vat 124. The conveyer chain comprises interconnected links 22 having lugs 24 to which are bolted the disc flights 25 between flight supporting plates 26. An aperture in the flights provides for passage round the sprocket. Various alternative forms of conveyer flights and pulleys are described in which flights may be connected to lugs, one attached to each side of a link or a single rectangular flight may be connected to lugs and frictionally engage the surface of a drum pulley. Alternatively a grooved pulley may be used with a circular disc flight.
