Abstract

Elastomers consisting essentially of a methylpolysiloxane containing 1.98 to 2.0 methyl groups per silicon atom are made by condensing a liquid comprising polymeric dimethyl siloxane containing up to 2.0 mol. per cent copolymerized monomethylsiloxane and 0.1 to 6 per cent by weight of a zirconyl nitrate. Zirconyl nitrates specified are 3ZrO2.2N2O5, ZrO2.N2O5, ZrO(NO3)2.2H2O, Zr2O5(NO3)2. 5H2O, Zr(NO3)4.5H2O, ZrO(NO3)2.3 1/2 H2O and ZrO(NO3)2. Fillers, e.g. diatomaceous earth, titania, lithopone, talc and silica, and pigments may be added. In examples, a methylpolysiloxane containing 1.998 methyl groups per silicon atom was compounded with ZrO(NO3)2. 3 1/2 H2O, and (1) TiO2, and (2) "Celite" (Regis tered Trade Mark), and the products were then moulded under pressure at 150 DEG C. and heated at 200 DEG C. Specifications 592,018 and 594,481 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of elastomers of other methyl silicone gums and the modified elastic products disclosed in Specification 592,018 and 594,481. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
