Abstract
Carbon pastes, for the manufacture of electrodes and the internal linings of electric furnaces and electrolytic cells, and made from carbonaceous material of various sizes and a binder, e.g. pitch, are prepared by separating the carbonaceous material into a coarser and a finer fraction, the former constituting 30-75 per cent of the whole, mixing the coarser fraction with the binder until all the particles are substantially wetted, adding the finer fraction, and continuing the mixing until the mass is fully homogeneous. If the carbonaceous material is porous, the finest particles of the coarser fraction are similar in size to the pores of the largest particles; if the pores in the material are comparatively small, the smaller particles of the coarser fraction should be approximately 0.2 mm. in size. The binder is preferably used in liquid condition and the coarser fraction may be first mixed only with a part of the binder, the remainder being added with the finer fraction; alternatively, the coarser fraction may be mixed with the binder in solid condition, the binder being liquefied by heating before the fine fraction is added.
