Abstract
Carbonaceous electrodes are prepared with the aid of a binder obtained by grinding pitch (or like carbonaceous material), having a softening point above 100 DEG C., to a powder of such a degree of fineness that at least 70% of the powder consists of particles which pass through a 200 mesh Tyler screen. The powdered pitch may be mixed with the dry components (coke, anthracite or graphite) of the electrode composition, preferably initially at room temperature, although heat may be applied during mixing after an initial cold-mixing. In an example, pitch of 155 DEG C. softening point is wet-ground in a ball mill until 70% of the pitch will pass through a 200 mesh Tyler screen. Surplus water is removed by filtration, using a vacuum filter, and the paste is blended with petroleum coke. After pre-heating the mixture at 90 DEG C. for 24 hours and at 320 DEG C. for 48 hours, the composition is baked at a temperature rising to 1000 DEG C. in the course of 57 1/2 hours. The electrodes are suitable for use in metallurgical processes, such as the production of aluminium by electrolysis.
