Abstract

658,962. Electrolytic cells. KREBS & CO., Ltd. Nov. 12, 1947, No. 30074. Convention date, Nov. 28, 1946. [Class 41] A cell for the electrolysis of solutions comprises a plurality of anode box elements, each element comprising a number of anodes secured with a large contact surface area on a metallic framework directly connected to an electric current supply, the anode elements alternating with cathode box elements each consisting of two perforated spaced cathodes reinforced with a frame, the outer cathode box elements containing only one cathode each and forming the outer vertical side walls of the cell. As shown, each anode box 2 has the lower part formed with a trapezoidal groove 3 in which are fitted the lower ends of anodes 1. Non-hardening putty 4 is used to ensure a tight seal. Each anode box is externally coated with electrically insulating composition 16, for example vulcanized rubber. The anodes are impregnated, adjacent their contact with the anode boxes, with conducting material which will prevent access of the electrolyte. The cathode boxes, with the exception of the outer boxes, are each formed of two perforated cathodes 7 reinforced by a frame 8. A diaphragm (not shown) is arranged between each anode box and cathode box. The boxes are provided at their bases with flanges to which connection is made to a source of current. The boxes are clamped together by rods 15 the length of which varies according to the number of boxes in a cell.
