[Class 146 (ii)] [Also in Group I] A tool for-tensioning a band of wire or strapping by drawing a part through a connecting member 24 integral with or attached to the band and then joining it to the member 24 comprises a support 1 mounting a pair of independently movable gripping jaws 6, 9 arranged so that one 9 is first moved to grip the band against the jaw 6 and then both jaws and the band are moved together, the band passing freely through a oneway gripping device 17, 20 on the support which prevents reverse movement of the band and an end abutment 23 engaging between the member 24 and the part of the band extending through and from the member 24 to the tool in opposition to the direction of movement of that part of the band by the jaws 6, 9. A hook is formed manually on the end of a metal band 13, Fig. 1, by using a slot 31 in a hardened insert 29 in a handle 2 of the tool. The hook is inserted in an aperture 25, Fig. 6, in the connecting member 24 and the other end of the band is inserted through the same aperture and passed between the jaws 6, 9, 17, 20 of the tool, so that the abutment 23 which is formed as a tapered nose bears against the band where it emerges from the aperture 25. The jaw 17 of the one-way gripping device, is integral with the support 1 and handle 2 of the tool and the jaw 20, which is spring loaded, is pivotally mounted on the support 1. The tensioning jaw 6 is integral with a plate 4 which is pivoted by a pin 5 to the support 1. A handle 3 is also pivoted on the pin 5 and by means of a notch 11 in its end 10 engages the jaw 9 which is pivotally mounted on the plate 4. Movement of the handles 2 and 3 towards each other first rocks the jaw 9 in a clockwise direction to grip the band 13 and then both jaws 6, 9 move in an anti-clockwise direction to tension the band. After tensioning the tool is moved anti-clockwise to form a hook in the free end of the band using the nose 23 as a fulcrum and the band is cut by any suitable means. The wings 26 of the connecting member are then hammered down to grip the hooks. The connecting member may be integral with the band and may have more than one aperture.
