Abstract

657,507. Fused electrolyte apparatus. COMPAGNIE DE PRODUITS CHIMIQUES ET ELECTROMETALLURGIQUES ALAIS, FROGES & CAMARGUE. Aug. 19, 1948, No. 21880. Convention date, Sept. 8, 1947. [Class 41] [Also in Group XI] In a fused electrolyte cell metal currentcarrying bars extend vertically downwards passing through courses of heat-insulating bricks and through a packing of pulverulent material. As shown in Fig. 2, T-shaped current carrying bars 15 extend from a carbon crucible lining 14 through heat-insulating bricks 12 and through a concrete supporting arch 17. The bars are fixed by carbon paste or cast metal 13 in slots in the carbon lining 14 (shown ) in the form of slabs) so that they can move in accordance with any movement of the slabs during electrolysis. Spaces 18 are fitted with pulverulent packing (not shown) to prevent air from reaching the carbon. The bars 15 may be of cruciform section. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 10, a bar 23 is surrounded by refractory pulverulent material 27 and a machine of alumina and fine refractory dust 29.' Beneath this is a slit sheet of asbestos 28 in a recess provided in a layer of refractory filling 32. Within the concrete arch 17 is placed heat-insulating slag wool 30 supported by metal sheets 31 which are spot-welded to the bar 23. As electrolysis proceeds the carbon slabs move upwardly to a certain extent and the slag wool is compressed.
