Abstract

657,079. Tubular heat-exchangers. YORKSHIRE TAR DISTILLERS, Ltd. Dec. 29, 1948, No. 33390. [Class 64(iii)] In the recovery of heat from liquors such as coal tar, pitch, bituminous residues and like materials which deposit sediment, the hot liquor is caused to travel downwardly' at a relatively low velocity, out of contact with any heat exchange surfaces w h e r e b y suspended material in the liquor will be deposited, and then upwardly in contact with heat exchange surfaces. The apparatus shown comprisesa chamber 1 having an inlet 2 and an outlet 8 remote from: the lower end of the chamber, for the liquor to be treated, an annular shell 5 within the chamber secured to and extending downwardly from its upper extremity, and heat exchange elements, e.g. coils 7, 7a arranged in the space between the shell 5 and the chamber wall, the space available for the liquor per unit length of chamber being less between the chamber wall and the annular shell than within the latter. Hot liquor flows downwardly through the shell 5, upwardly over the heat exchange elements and through a grid 16 to the outlet 8. Sediment is deposited in the hopper-shaped lower end 3 of the chamber and is withdrawn through the valved outlet 4. The lower edge of the annular shell 5 may be serrated. Liquor at a higher temperature than that which leaves through the outlet 8, may be drawn off through the bleed pipe 13. Gases or vapours are separated from the liquor in a flash chamber 10 before it. passes to the inlet 2
