Abstract

The invention comprises pteridines of the general formula <FORM:0656769/IV (b)/1> where R and R1 may be an ethyl, isopropyl or anisyl radical. They may be prepared by condensing by heating 2.4.5.6-tetraminopyrimidine or a salt thereof with an a -diketone of the general formula <FORM:0656769/IV (b)/2> R and R1 having the above significance. Salts mentioned of the pyrimidine are the acetate and bisulphite salts. The reaction may be effected in an acid medium, e.g. acetic acid. In the examples, compounds of the above general formula are prepared wherein R and R1 each represent ethyl, isopropyl and anisyl radicals, and wherein they represent the ethyl and anisyl radicals, and the isopropyl and anisyl radicals. Compounds of the above general formula, where R and R1 each represent n-propyl and see-butyl radicals, and where R and R1 represent the phenyl and ethyl radicals and the phenyl and isopropyl radicals may be prepared by the above method. The Specification also refers to compounds of the above general formula, wherein R and R1 each represent the methyl and phenyl radicals, and wherein R and R1 represent the phenyl and methyl radicals. The Provisional Specification refers to the use of any of the following a -diketones for reaction with the above pyrimidine to give substituted pteridines: (a) symmetrical aliphatic diketones having alkyl groups attached to the diketone nucleus which alkyl groups may have from 2 to 12 carbon atoms in straight chains or from 3 to 5 carbon atoms in branched chains; (b) symmetrical aromatic diketones having substituted aryl groups attached to the diketone nucleus, e.g. alkoxy groups; (c) unsymmetrical diketones containing up to 12 carbon atoms in straight chains or from three to five carbon atoms in branched chains.
