[Class 68 (i) ] In a machine for cutting into mine or quarry walls, a rotary cutting tool is swingably mounted about an axis perpendicular to the rotary axis on a base member which can be advanced on a support towards the wall to be cut, driving means being adapted to rotate and swing the tool simultaneously and control means being provided to advance the base member and simultaneously reverse the swing of the tool. As shown, a motor 11 drives a pair of friction discs 14 and 15 which may be moved longitudinally of the driving shaft 13 by a two-armed forked lever 34 pivoted at 35 and urged in a clockwise direction by a spring 36. The friction discs may engage either of a pair of pulleys 20 and 21 which by means of belts drive pulleys 37 and 38 driving by bevel gearing 39, 40, 41, a pinion engaging a rack 44 and producing a swinging movement of a platform 12, carrying the gear, which is fixed to a base member 6 pivoted at 6a. The base member, carrying a drill driven by the motor 11, may be moved along a threaded shaft by the rotation of a handwheel 50. A gear wheel 51, meshed with the shaft, moves through bevel gearing 52, a cam 54 which by means of a lever moves the two-armed lever 34 bringing the discs 14 and 20 or 15 and 21 into contact causing the drill to traverse in opposite directions. One complete turn of the handwheel produces the forward movement and at the same time reverses the direction of swing- ing. The control and driving gear may be so arranged that its weight counterbalances that of the drill. After the drill has been moved to its farthest extent forward the machine, which may be mounted on rails, may be moved parallel to the wall and a fresh cut made, the distance moved being such that successive cuts overlap with those previously made.
